2018 Week Three Wednesday Word
Hello Everyone,
All of the pieces feel into place and Week Two was a pretty amazing day eh? From fantastic field conditions, to brilliant weather, to some super close contests, our Sunday Fun Day was awesome.
It is a credit to the City of Calgary Parks Crews that all of the Athletic Parks are in such fantastic shape - We have thanked them.
AFSL Standings: http://calgarysoftball.ca/
Please don’t forget to send us your scores on game day. If your numbers are not listed or incorrect - Please touch base with us. Best for someone to fire us an email at afsl1@shaw.ca after the second game ends. Or private message the scores via Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/roy.larking.7 Scores can also be called in or texted to: 403-860-8508
Weekly First To Bat: Coin Toss, or some other creative contest, decides who bats first in the first game and then switch it up for the second game.
Lost & Found: A glove, which was won at the 2018 KOP, was found on Sunday morning - Email us the color and where it was lost and we will get it to you.
Mother's Day: Happy Mother’s Day Weekend to all our amazing Moms out there! If a team needs to play one nine-inning game - or is short girls this Sunday - Please try to be flexible
Please remember to be at your game sites by Noon and get your Sunday Fun Day going as soon as possible = Every Sunday.
Pop Davies Bases: Long metal “dessert spoons” have been added to each of the base storage boxes. Please use the spoons if the receptacles have too much shale in them. It takes about ten seconds to pull out the excess shale and bases should fit snug to the surface.
TIE GAMES: There are no TIE GAMES in the AFSL. If your game is tied at 3:00 PM, and no other teams are waiting to play on your diamond, please play extra innings. If the game is tied and teams are waiting to play - Please call it in as a tie and we will help you play it out at a later date.
Batting Against Breast Cancer: If you are interested in entering a Team in the BABC event, the date is Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Optimist Park. This is a One Day tournament with tons of prizes, including a Team Houseboat Holiday, and you can register here: 2018 BABC LINK
Single Players: Any Ladies or ManSlaves wishing to join one our three AFSL All-Girls Squads, please click HERE.

AFSL 2017 Champions
Congratulations to our 2017 Champions! Overall & Kokanee: Buffalo Bob's Budweiser: Side Street Ballers Keith's Champions: The Dirty Sox Rolling Rock Champions: Hudson Legacy! Congrats as well to our other four Finalists: Karma, Sons Of Pitches, Bayside Tigers and the Brew Jays! Thank you to Keys Please for generously supplying our Championship Sunday BBQ, our Volunteers, and the Ground Crew at Optimist Park. With everyone's help, we pulled of a near perfect Show. Love & Hugs to our Angels for the perfect weather they sent us. See you at the KOP on April 9, 2018, to celebrate our 40th AFSL Anniversay Season!
Please Don't Feed The LowLife
While it is sad (pathetic) that car prowling and break-ins happen at every ball diamond parking lot in the City - It is up to each and every one of US to put an end to it. We had a Week 2 break-in at Optimist Park on April 30 on the Quad side of the arena. It sucks and it's a terrible way to end a Sunday Fun Day.
PLEASE DO NOT leave anything of value on display in your vehicles when you head to your games. That includes 83 cents in a cup holder, a pack of smokes (full or empty) electronics, wallets, pieces of mail, bags or boxes of any kind, NOTHING!!!
If we do not provide feeding grounds for the lowlife, who will steal anything of minimal value, they will not come back to the ballparks. Seriously Calgary Ball Players - Cull and Cut Out the LowLife - Let's Make This Happen People!
2017 AFSL Week Two Wednesday Words
Hello All,
If you ever have questions or concerns - We have answers so please send us an email. Certainly not the 39th Annual AFSL Opening Day Celebration we hoped for eh? How, when and if Week One is played will be determined at a later date.Last week the forecast went from decent to bad as Sunday approached - The opposite is happening this week. Mother Nature has been on our side over 90% of the time during our regular season for decades - She can be mean in April though. We will follow the schedule dates as they are posted at these links:
Budweiser:calgarysoftball.ca/divisions.html?divID=2
Kokanee: calgarysoftball.ca/divisions.html?divID=1
Diamond Closures & Facility Status: cocnmp.com/facilitystatus/?id=3
If the weather is inclement, please refer to the Facility Status link above to check if your field is open. We will always notify everyone if a Sunday Fun Day is canceled. We have ZERO control over whether the Diamonds are open or closed. Park Workers have a mandate they need to follow and their decisions are always final. Their mandate includes protecting the players and the facilities. Someone diving for a ball on wet fields is a safety issue and, if they dig out a big divot, the "young" field then needs repair.Exception: Deerfoot Park is an un-manned facility so it's always open. However, if our other 12 fields are closed, we will most likely call off all games. Park Workers are Good People - Say Hello to them!
KOP Donations
We dropped off the AFSL $650 Kidsport donation and the Shaw Charity Classic does a 50% match so your 2017 KOP donation is now worth $1,000. Thank You: facebook.com/roy.larking.7 We are hoping for one more donation and then we will add the funds to the pages of our three BABC Crews.
Thank You for your patience as we get our 2017 Fun in the Sun with Family and Friends season rolling.
Cheers!

AFSL 2017 Opening Day
Celebrating Our 39th Season - AFSL Opening Day Do Over is April 30, 2017
2016
2016 AFSL Champions
Well, we had another amazing AFSL Championship Sunday - including two Finals that were won in bottom of the ninth in walk-off fashion! Congratulations to our 2016 AFSL Champions left to right: $wigs Express (Rolling Rock) Sons of Pitches (Budweiser) Buffalo Bob's (back-to-back Overall AFSL Kokanee Champs) and Knoxville's Tavern (Keith's). Thank You to everyone who contributed to our success this season. Amazing People = Amazing Fun in the Sun with Family and Friends!
Kokanee AFSL Overall Championship - Buffalo Bob's vs Tops Pizza
Although Ken and the Tops Pizza Crew snapped Buffalo Bob's full season plus winning streak, with a 15-8 win back in Week 6, Devan and the Bob's Crew were too much for Tops on Championship Sunday. Bob's jumped out to a early lead and never looked back as they posted a 25-7 victory to earn back-to-back AFSL titles. Bob's now have a shot at becoming (we think) the first 3-Peat winners of the Overall AFSL Championship.
Budweiser Championship - The Brew Jays vs Sons Of Pitches
In a back and forth battle, from inning to inning, Chrissy and the Sons Of Pitches Crew held off Ryan and The Brew Jays Crew. Down 23-18 heading into the bottom of the ninth - the Brew Jays scored three runs but came up a little short in a 23-21 decision. Congrats to Sons of Pitches who also won the Mountain of Beer at the KOP. The SOP's are the first team to claim a MOB and a AFSL Championship in the same season.
Keith's Championship - Knoxville's Tavern vs The Blind Monk
Attempting to go back-to-back in the Keith's Championship, Pauly and The Blind Monk Crew battled Dave and the Knoxville's Tavern Crew. Another close contest, for most of the game, this one ended in spectacular fashion. Down by five runs heading into the bottom of the ninth Knoxville's chipped away before Josh hit a two-out - two-run walk off double - to send Knoxville's home as the Keith's Champs with a stirring 29-28 victory. A rather large gathered crowd witnessed that fantastic finish!
Rolling Rock Championship - The $wigs Express vs Ice Cold Pitchers
In the Rolling Rock Final for a second straight season, Renee and the Ice Cold Pitchers Crew battled Chad and The $wig Express Crew. This was another amazing finish. With the score at 18-16 for $wigs Express after eight innings, ICP scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to grab a 20-18 lead. $wigs Express tied the score at 20-20 but ICP recorded two quick outs. A couple of base hits and then a walk off - over the fence - home run earned The $wig Express a 23-20 victory.
Hollywood couldn't write some of the events, that happened on the field, in the stands and on the sidelines during our final 2016 Sunday Fun Day.
Thank You to all the Players and Fans for an amazing AFSL 2016 Season and Championship Sunday!
If you have any comments about anything that happened during the 2016 Season - Please touch base with us.
The AFSL is what it is because of our Team Reps, our Players, our Fans, our Kids, our Puppies and our generous Sponsors.
With my Whole Heart - Thank You Everyone!

AFSL 2015 Playoffs - Put Away The Tanks!
Hey All,
We have had some unfortunate incidents that have caused some games to be cancelled during the regular season. For that reason, we are giving the nine teams that have make-up games until August 3, 2015, to play those contests. We are hoping that a 22 will be in everyone's "Games Played" column by August 3. We will understand if time doesn't permit it but...... Games not played will be left as 0-0 matches in the standings and they will left out of the GP column.
If you are not in that group of nine and want to play an X-Game between July 27 and August 3rd - let us know. We will pair teams up and help with the diamond locations.
2015 AFSL PLAYOFFS
Put away the tanks......
After carefully pondering the very much appreciated comments and suggestions everyone sent us regarding the AFSL Playoffs.....
Kind of a sheep being sent to the wolves type scenario has developed during Round One of the 2015 AFSL Playoffs.
All four Cup Chases will be resorted at the start of each round.
1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc etc etc...... will be the First Round format in the Budweiser and Kokanee divisions.
It's a rare Round One scenario and it's part of the experiments that are aiding us in our pursuit of AFSL Playoff Perfection.
Budweiser Round One non-winners will move to the Rolling Rock Cup Chase
Kokanee Round One non-winners will move to the Keith's Cup Chase.
Playoffs are August 9th, 16th 23rd and Championship Sunday is August 30, 2015.
Everyone has a game on the 9th and 16th - The season ends for non-winners on the 16th - FAKITY FAK FAK!
More on the who, what, where and when of the playoffs will be sent out on August 4, 2015.
Full playoff information will be sent via email and posted on our schedule pages at the website.
If you have questions or comments - please email us.
Good Luck in Week 12 - Have FUN Everybody!

Images to follow. Love & Hugs to the Angels among us for organizing the PERFECT weather ~ BB
AFSL Championship Sunday Update
Hello Everyone,
We now have the Elite Eight that will compete in the four Championship Finals on Sunday. Amazed by the awesome conditions at Optimist Park this past weekend, the last of the semifinal battles played out under a mostly sunny sky – on a near perfect day.
Kato & James and the Crew from Titans Tavern are looking for their sixth Overall AFSL Championship in twelve years. Devan & Josh and the Buffalo Bob’s Crew are aiming for their first AFSL Championship after they were runner-ups in the Keith’s Cup Championship last season. Good Luck to Everyone in the Finals – Remember – Fun in the Sun!
Thank You to Krista, The Chief, Barry and Spinner for stepping up and umpiring the semifinal contests on Sunday. The Chief and his Crew will be out in full force to umpire the four Championship matches. The Quad at Optimist Park will be jumping on Sunday!
Everyone is invited to soak up the Sun while taking in the AFSL Championship Chase Final contests. We have four awesome games to close out the 2014 AFSL festivities.
Round Three Playoffs - September 7, 2014
Hello All,
It is often said that “all good things must come to an end” and so it is with Summer & Softball in Calgary. Following the Round Two contests 20 teams have moved on and 14 teams have been eliminated.
We are closely monitoring the journey through the 2014 AFSL playoffs. Please remember that Playoff Roadmap was carefully planned and largely completed long ago – in a far away place. While we have noticed some bumps along the path – we have also had some pretty amazing games.
Perfection is tough to obtain and we do recognize that some of you had a pretty rough playoff path. This will be looked at closely as we continue to reach for a fair and balanced AFSL playoff format.
On the positive side – there were a lot of very close contests in Round Two as seven games were decided by three runs or less – many in the bottom of the ninth inning. As well, some of the scores on the attached sheet are not entirely indicative of how close certain games actually were = two rough innings were the deciding factor.
Playoff Eliminated Teams
If you would like to play an X-Game on September 7th – please email us. Diamonds are in wickedly short supply on that weekend but we will see what is available once we know how many diamonds we need. We would like to get this scheduled and wrapped up as soon as possible so please us let know as soon as you can.
We would like to keep you up to date on the Championship Chases with our General Emails moving forward. If you prefer we didn’t send them please drop us a line. Championship Sunday will play out on the Quad at Optimist Park and we hope that many of you will attend the festivities.
AFSL Championship Chase Contenders
Congrats on your success to date. The final path to all four AFSL 2014 Championship Chases has now been mapped out. All four Chases are now in single game elimination mode and your current ranking sticks with you the rest of the way.
Due to Week Night Leagues encroaching on Sundays with their season ending tournaments and because we have never booked diamonds this late – we were unable to get all of the games at Optimist. Our next best option was the cozy confines of the Quad at Shouldice.
Teams DO NOT need to bring bases to any of our remaining playoff games.
Please Remember the Playoff Home Run Rule = All Diamonds
After FIVE balls clear the fence (inside the park home runs don’t count) – the rest will be OUTS on all diamonds in all games. Strategically manage your Five Home Runs and keep it in the yard if you reach the maximum.
Stealing of second and third is IN PLAY in all AFSL playoff games – please put an experienced player behind the plate.
If anyone, still in the playoffs or not, has any questions or comments – please drop us a line. Our next General League Email will arrive at an inbox near you soon after the Labor Day Weekend. Positive that most of you have amazing plans for the LDW – Have a good time when doing that thing you do.
Cheers!

Round Two Playoffs - August 24, 2014
Hey All,
Watching the weather and keeping our fingers and toes crossed for a sunny Sunday Fun Day – it does look like we will get a decent day.
A few reminders in advance of the AFSL Round Two Playoff contests.
Eligible Players:
Do not stack up your team for your playoff games – it’s not right – just don’t do it.
As per AFSL Guideline #27
http://calgarysoftball.ca/league-information/league-guidelines
To be eligible to play in the play-offs all teams must be able to prove that players were part of their active roster for at least three weeks of the regular season. The proof is in the scorebooks so please keep accurate records.
That said – there are circumstance that happen and we kindly ask all teams to be flexible.
That said – Should you have someone filling in for an injured player or someone who has left your team recently (back to school etc.) PLEASE discuss the replacement with your opponents Team Rep BEFORE the game begins. If the player doesn’t have the required eligibility, your opposition is within their rights to say NO to the replacement player.
Hey, we are all friends here – please be flexible.
Stealing Rule:
Stealing of second and third is in play in all games during the playoffs and can’t be “voted” on by the two teams. Please put an experienced player in the catcher position.
Playoff Home Run Rule:
After FIVE balls clear the fence (inside the park home runs don’t count) – the rest will be OUTS on all diamonds in all games. Strategically manage your Five Home Runs and keep it in the yard if you reach the maximum.
If you have any questions – please drop us a line.
Start doing your sun dance today……..
Cheers!

AFSL 2014 Playoff FAQs
Hey All,
An expanded explanation of the Playoff Home Run Rule:
After watching a billion balls fly out of the yard during games at Shouldice earlier this season – we felt something had to be done for the playoffs.
Being as we pushed the playoffs back so far – and couldn’t get it all arranged with the City until mid-May due to weather – we will be playing some playoff games on fields with short porches. This includes some Playoff Week 3 games at Shouldice Park.
We don’t want to make separate rules for separate venues so >>>> we changed it across the board. Home Runs over a 226′ fence are a fairly easy task – they should not be the main factor that decides games.
Another experiment on a long list of experiments during the Year of the Experiment.
Hope everyone is cool with this…….
Cheers!

Hi All,
Some answers to some questions as Week One of the 2014 AFSL Playoffs approaches:
Q – Who is eligible to play in the Playoffs
A – As per the AFSL Guidelines: To be eligible to play in the play-offs all teams must be able to prove that players were part of their active roster for at least three weeks of the regular season. The proof is in the scorebooks so please keep accurate records.
NOTE: If a player has come onboard late to replace someone due to injury, or someone who has gone back to school, or some other personal reason, we kindly ask teams to be flexible. Please bring this up prior to the start of the game. On the other side of the coin – DO NOT stack your roster for the playoffs – it’s not fair and, if brought to our attention, forfeits could be issued to the stacking team. If you have to explain our rules to someone half way through the game – you probably have a “ringer” – Just Don’t Do It!
Q – Is stealing allowed in the Playoffs?
A - Yes – Stealing of second and third base is IN PLAY in all games in all divisions during the playoffs.
Q – What is the Playoff Home Run Rule?
A- After FIVE balls clear the fence (inside the park home runs don’t count) – the rest will be OUTS on all diamonds in all games. Strategically manage your Five Home Runs and keep it in the yard if you reach the maximum.
Q – Are the playoff games timed?
A - Yes and no. There won’t be someone hanging around with a stop watch but all of our diamonds have two games scheduled this weekend. Games are slated for 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Please be on time for your games.
Q – Are we playing one or two games?
A - All playoff games are ONE nine inning game.
Q – Who is responsible for putting out the bases at Pop Davies?
A – We kindly ask that both teams bring bases to your games this weekend – to make sure we have them. While it is normally the HOME team that puts out the bases during the regular season – you can flip a coin to decide who puts out the bases during the playoffs. In the end – how they get put out doesn’t matter as long as each game has bases.
Q – Are there Umpires for the playoffs?
A - As has always been the case, Umpires are not assigned to playoff games until Championship Sunday – please umpire your own at-bats (FAIRLY) during the first four playoff weekends. We will be asking for assistance in finding Championship Sunday umpires so please let us know if you can help out – THANKS!
PLEASE REMEMBER: Though we are entering the playoff stage and things can get a little “tense” all players on all teams must remember the AFSL Mantra: Fun in the Sun with Family and Friends!
If you have questions that are not included above – please drop us a line as we have answers.
Good Luck & Have FUN out there!

AFSL 2014 Week Four Update
Hey All,
Another amazing weekend of Fun in the Sun with Family and Friends is in the books.
Thanks to the Crews from Titans Tavern, Karma, Banditos, The Black Swan, Monstar and Studio 82 for participating in the contests played on non-fenced fields on Sunday. Games were held at Glamorgan Park and at Chief Many Beers Field up in Coventry Hills. All indications point to the games going off without a hitch. Thank You to everyone :~)
AFSL Points To Ponder
*** In A Pinch & It’s Important >>> Call BatBoy
We are receiving a ton of fantastic emails telling us that the season is rolling along just super – we thank everyone for that. However, sometimes an important issue will arise during a game. In these instances, please call us at 403-860-8508 and we will help you rectify the situation. The BatPhone is live during game days and there is usually someone around to answer it. BatBoy likes to enjoy his Sunday Fun Days but he is also available to help if needed. If anyone has a smart phone you can always give the guidelines a quick scan. We are over-hauling the website and it is going to be very mobile friendly.
http://calgarysoftball.ca/league-information/league-guidelines
*** There Are No Ties In Baseball As Per AFSL Guideline #34
No game shall end in a tie. A regulation game that is tied will go into extra innings and play will continue until a winner has been decided. If a tie is called in, we will use a flip of a coin to decide the winner. Heads is always home, tails is always visitor. Understanding that we have limited diamond time >>> ties still need to be broken. Moving forward, if you play at a field where other teams are not showing up right at 3:00 PM >>> please play on and break the tie. If time is tight, and both teams agree, the winner of the first inning of the second game can be awarded the Game One win – that inning would count for ONE run.
*** Home Run Rule
Having measured the fences at our various ball diamond locations, and paraphrasing the amazing Shania Twain, Home Runs – That don’t impress me much. Couple points still need to be noted here please. If one team has reached the MAX five home runs and someone hits another – that goes as a single, all base runners move up ONE base – including home if a runner is on third base. After a team reaches the FIVE MAX – the other team must get to five before the first team can hit a sixth that counts as a round-tripper. The Home Run Rule is explained in greater detail in the AFSL Guidelines at the link noted above.
*** Leave ONLY Your Footprints
We want to remind everyone that before you leave your diamond, you should triple check that only your footprints remain. While we wish every league was as good about diamond clean-up as the AFSL Crews are – that isn’t always the case. I If the City supplied trash cans are full, please leave any garbage bags you may have at the base of the trash containers. f everyone picks up one piece of litter – there will be no litter to pick up.
*** Standings Update
We didn’t send a hard copy of the standing last week as we wanted to know if people actually take note of the emails with the hard copies. The Verdict: Not So Much. That said, we will continue to update the website and email hard copies of the standings.
Drop us a line if you have any questions/comments/concerns.
Keep Our Celebrations Rolling.
Cheers!

We have an individual schedule for each team – if you want a copy – please drop us a line.
**** Playoff dates are posted on the schedule pages above.
**** Please Remember: Designated Home Team puts out the bases at these locations:
Deerfoot Park
Chief Many Beers Field
Glamorgan Park
Pop Davies Park
Woodbine Park
**** Who Bats First is always determined at the start of each new Sunday.
Designated Home Team decides the process - can be a coin toss, bat toss, fake Bocce Ball (BatBoy is 2-0 this season) mix it up, be creative, be fair and have fun with it.
Winner decides to bat first or second in the 1st game – roles reverse in the 2nd game.
Please let us know if you come up with a Who Bats First Decider of your own :~)
**** Home Run Rule
If one team hits five home runs, until the other team hits five of their own, all subsequent dingers are singles. Once both teams reach five HR’s it becomes one for one after that.
**** Please play safe and in control – Respect the Park Workers and the neighbors surrounding your ball field community – Leave just your footprints behind please!
If you have any other questions or concerns – please send them to us in an email.

2014 AFSL Schedules Have Been Posted
Our 2014 AFSL regular season schedule crafting journey is complete. Thank You everyone, Team Reps and Players, for your patience as we get the 2014 AFSL Season rolling. With Optimist Park closed until late June, a ton of teams from a ton of leagues were displaced and finding replacement diamonds was a challenge on certain dates. We would like to send a huge Thank You out to the Crew at City of Calgary Facility Bookings for their AMAZING efforts while we sorted out the 2014 AFSL diamond inventory iist.
UPDATE (07/05/14)
Ignoring the weather forecast, that is not good again, the schedules have been revised and reloaded. The website schedules are the only schedules that are OFFICIAL – always. We pushed the playoffs back one week – so far – and we added August 10th to the end of regular season schedule. We need to confirm a few things with Facility Bookings when it comes to extending the season. As such, the schedule is subject to being revised at a later date. For now, please view the schedule one week at a time.
Please click on your SCHEDULE from the link in the tool-bar above. Please email us at afsl1@shaw.ca if you ever have any questions, comments or concerns.

2014 AFSL Schedule FAQ Update
Hello and Thank You for stopping by!
Below we have outlined Frequently Asked Questions regarding the 2014 AFSL Schedule. If your questions are not answered below, please email us at afsl1@shaw.ca and we will do our best to get back to you within 24 hours. We welcome your questions and comments.
2014 AFSL Schedule FAQ ‘s
Q – What happened to the original Week One games?
A – Our original Opening Day – Sunday April 27, 2014, was clearly a rocky start in certain instances. New teams, new diamonds, weird weather, Park Workers not yet in mid-season form, and diamonds not in mid-season form, were all contributing factors. Being as 50% of our teams were unable to play, the “unofficial” Week One goes down in the history books as “X-Games” and the “official” AFSL Opening Day is now May 4, 2014.
To those who won their games – especially The Chief and his Banditos Crew who spanked and swept the defending Overall League Champions Karma >>> good efforts – sorry they don’t count. If it helps >>> the bottom line is, as it always should be, some of you got out and played ball while having Fun in the Sun with Family and Friends last Sunday.
Q – How do we know if the diamonds are OPEN or CLOSED?
A - For diamond locations, other than Deerfoot Park, the website link below is the “Final Decider” when determining if your weekly diamond is open or closed. We had a lengthy conversation with the City of Calgary Facility Bookings Crew on Monday , April 28, 2014. They have assured us that the online Facility Status Tool will be updated regularly now.
If any of our diamond facilities are posted as CLOSED at the website – they are CLOSED. Please eliminate the dial-up Rain Out Line as a source of determining the status of our diamonds. In the case of Deerfoot Park and scattered fields – they are always open.
To All Teams: Please communicate with your opposition Team Rep if we are faced with inclement weather. This is the one and only Facility Status Tool that should be used:
http://cocnmp.com/facilitystatus/?id=3.
Q – Why did it take so freakin’ long to generate the the 2014 AFSL Schedule?
A - There were several factors that delayed the publishing of the schedule. They include, but are not limited to, the Optimist Park temporary closure (until June 22, 2014), adding new teams, losing diamonds, adding one/two week diamonds, as well as “One Year Test” of Divisional Restructuring. We went from 28 teams playing on 14 different diamond locations last year – to 34 teams playing on 28 different diamond locations this season. Suffice to say >>>> AFSL schedule making has been a huge challenge this season.
Q – What does Home & Away signify on the schedule?
A- Home Teams are responsible for putting out the bases. They are also responsible for providing the game balls on single game weeks and for the first game of a double header. The Away Team supplies the balls for the second game. The schedule designated Home Team will also toss the coin to determine who bats first – Please see next question.
Q – How do we determine who bats first?
A - Team Reps are to meet at home plate prior to the start of Game Day EVERY Sunday. They will exchange pleasantries and the home/visitors will be decide by a coin toss. The Home Team listed on the schedule tosses the coin and the Away Team calls it. The coin toss winner determines if they want to bat first or last during single week play. For double headers the winner of the coin toss decides whether they want to bat first or last in the FIRST GAME. The roles are then reserved in Game Two.
Feel free to get creative with something other than a coin toss. Try the old “Bat Toss” game! Or, as BatBoy likes to do, play fake Bocce Ball. BatBoy and the other Team Rep each get one roll of the game ball >>> from home plate out to a beverage container placed on the pitchers area. Closest to the container, from any angle – without knocking over the can or hitting the other ball, is the Home/Away Decider. in this instance, the Away Team Rep is given the option to toss first or second. Try it as it’s a nice “icebreaker” start to the day.
Q – How was the 2014 AFSL Schedule Created
A - While we are always in search of the most state-of-the-art scheduling tools, inputting team names, dates, times, and locations and hitting a button to create our schedule is still not possible. Our scheduling tools are however a huge help in getting to Step Two. Once the schedule is randomly generated, we need to chop that down to fit our number of weeks while ensuring that no team plays another team twice during the season. We then add the diamonds to the mix – carefully making sure that no diamond is used twice on any given week in either Division. The results are sorted, re-checked ten times, and then published.
Q – Do certain teams get preferential Diamond or Scheduling treatment?
A - The short answer here is YES! If Team A has played in the league for two decades – they have more than paid their dues. It needs to be noted that it wasn’t that long ago that the AFSL played on every Tom, Dick and Harry crappy School Field and never at the venues we enjoy today. As time has passed, we have accumulated the diamond stable we boast today and we are always looking to improve the list. Getting back the question – if we have to make a decision involving a veteran team versus say a third year team – the bend is normally towards the veteran team. Being FAIR to every team in Priority One!
Certain teams have been responsible for our Facility upgrades in the past and/or, they have played on the same diamond for years, they will generally get that field as their “priority” diamond each year. Further to this, a Team Rep may also be a Diamond Liaison between the AFSL and the City Park Worker. We want Park Workers to know where to go should any issues arise and we are grateful for the assistance these Teams Reps provide.
Last, but certainly not leasts, we receive a TON of requests from a TON of teams regarding Diamond Allocation or to play certain teams. We do our best to accommodate all requests and we are very proud of our 30-year track history in that regard.
Q – We have a game on a non-fenced ball diamond – Is this an AFSL trend?
A - The short answer here is >>> this is absolutely NOT a trend that will continue. Out of our 187 diamond locations this season, just three fields, at two locations, are non-fenced ball diamonds. One location is Glamorgan Park which was our Championship Sunday venue not all that long ago. The other field is Nose Creek and Krista & Kris from Banditos will be graciously hosting two games at the location. We fully expect that we will back on nothing but fenced ball diamonds for the 2015 AFSL season and we look forward to it :~)
We hope this answers any Schedule questions you may have. If you still have questions, or if you would like to send us your thoughts, please send us an email via the Say Hello! tab in the title bar above. Have an AMAZING Fun in the Sun 2014 AFSL Season Everyone.
Cheers!

AFSL 2014 Team Rep Contact List
Hey Everyone,
Below is the highly “unofficial” Team Rep Contact List – but it is official for Week One.
Divisions and scheduled are about to be loaded but now we want to see what happens with the wacky weather. That said if you are scheduled to play anywhere except Deerfoot Park, please check in at this link for a Softball Facility Status report. For those playing at Deerfoot Park, the City doesn’t designate a worker to that venue so it is always open. We do not advocate playing in less than ideal conditions and puddle soaked diamonds can be an accident waiting to happen. Please drop us an email if you have any questions.
Please check the Chalkboard for the most up-to-date Opening Day information.
Let’s hope we can get out and have some Fun in the Sun with Family and Friends!
Cheers!

AFSL 2013 Sunday Softball Champions
Hello Everyone,
Images to follow……
In perfect playing conditions, surrounded by an amazing group of Friends, the 2013 AFSL Sunday Softball Season wrapped up this weekend. Imagining that not many of our Team Reps are wake yet – following a Sunday of Celebration – we don’t have the game scores but >>> we do know this……
2013 AFSL Overall League Champions
Congratulations to the Crew from Karma on winning their fourth AFSL Championship! Team Reps Darcie and Al, along with the talented Karma squad, battled a very game and spirited Melrose Crew – inning for inning – before capturing an extremely close one run victory.
The level of play was surpassed only by the sportsmanship shown on the field by these two awesome AFSL teams. This was definitely a Sunday Softball Final for the ages. We thank Melrose, Karma, as well as their strong showing of fans – especially the young ones, for an amazing and memorable AFSL Championship Sunday – that goes out to fans of all teams!
Keiths Krankin' 'Em Out Division Champions
For the third time in their history, and now back-to-back, team Reps Rebecca and Conrad, along the Crew from the Black Swan are the AFSL 2013 Keith’s Division Champions. In the rubber match of their 2013 season series, against a very talented Buffalo Bob’s squad, the Swan’s bats proved to be just a little too hot to handle on Sunday.
Congratulation’s to both teams on their fine seasons – will we be seeing you both in the Kokanee Division anytime soon? Something to ponder over the coming winter :~)
Budweiser Bashers Division Champions
Congratulations to team Reps Patty and Gary along with the Crew from Rock Lounge as, for the second time in the building’s storied history, Studio 82 Rock Lounge is home to an AFSL Championship Team. It’s fitting that Patty Roy would drill a ball down the first base line to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Rock Lounge earned a closely contested win over Hudsons Canadian Tap House. Patty, Ray, Rick and the Staff at Studio 82 were amazing Friends of the AFSL, as well as the Diamond Divas/Rack Pack Family, once again this season >>> some “Karma” definitely rolled their way this weekend!
We would also like to thank Krista, Dee, The Chief, Paul, Rob and Barry for their donated time and efforts over the weekend. This awesome Umpire Crew handled all five games on Championship Sunday – with amazing spirit, passion and solid expertise!
Folks, BatBoy needs to step back for a few weeks to heal his heart and health – physically and mentally. A “State of the League” email will be sent out in late September. In the meantime, if you have comments on the 2013 AFSL Season – GOOD or BAD – we would like to hear them. The AFSL is YOUR LEAGUE! If you know something that can be improved upon – please drop us a line!
Thank You to the 2013 AFSL Team Reps and to everyone associated with our Sunday Softball League Family!
Cheers!

AFSL 2013 Championship Sunday
Hi Everyone,
Well, we said it last week and we’ll say again this week – it was another amazing weekend of Playoff Softball in the AFSL! Pictured below is the schedules for Championship Sunday on August 25, 2013, @ Pop Davies Athletic Park. The weather forecast looks fantatsic!
Hope to see you out there – even if you aren’t playing in the Championship games!
Overall 2013 AFSL League Championship
As indicated in the subject line of this email – then there were none – as in no undefeated teams are left in the AFSL this season The last hope for a perfect season was snuffed out on Sunday as the five time Champions – Titans Bar & Grill (20-0) fell to an inspired Crew from Team Melrose. Down 17-4 late in the game, Melrose put on a huge rally, pulled out some magical defense, and went on to defeat the 2012 AFSL defending Champs by a 21-20 final count. Melrose will now face Team Karma in the AFSL Championship
Karma defeated a very game Tops Pizza Crew – sorry, we don’t have the final count. Karma has knocked off teams with a combined 20-19 record while Melrose has won two contests against teams that had a combined 31-8 record. With many of the Diamond Divas Family playing, umpiring, and watching this game, along with one Beautiful Angel looking down on us from above, this contest will be an awesome AFSL 2013 Championship Final.
Keith’s Krankin’ ‘Em Out Championship
With wins over Three Crowns Pub and The Big Cheese, the Keith’s Division Championship will be decided by the top two teams during the regular season in the Keith’s Division. The Black Swan and Buffalo Bob’s finished the regular season with 15-4 records and they split their doubleheader match during the last weekend of the season – by scores of Buffalo Bob’s 18-17 and The Black Swan 11-8. Another epic battle is brewing here as well!
Budweiser Bashers Championship
Due to an unbalanced number of teams in the Budweiser Bashers Division, four teams still have a shot at the Bashers Championship. The upstart Partners Sliders (20-5) will battle Hudson’s Taphouse (15-8) who needed extra innings to knock of a very game The Grays Crew on Sunday. The other Bashers Championship finalist will be decided during The 20-3 Roadhouse versus the 17-4 Rock Lounge contest. The winners of those two games will immediately square off in the Budweiser Bashers Divisional Championship match-up.
All three Championship games will begin at about 1:15 PM this Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Pop Davies Park. Everyone from the AFSL is encouraged to come out and watch what will be an amazing 2013 AFSL Championship Sunday. Hope to see you out there!
Good Luck to Everyone Involved!
Cheers!
